I especially think that it was a good idea to include these items in the 2007 standards that were missing from the 1998 edition: troubleshooting, personal responsibility and developing cultural understanding. Looking at each one quickly, troubleshooting. I think that it is important to teach children troubleshooting so that they won't be frustrated when using technology and to build independence. Personal responsibility. Children need to know that yes, using the computer\/web is fun and engaging, but with it comes responsibility. They are responsible for what they type and how it may affect others and also reflect back on their character. Finally, developing cultural understanding...using podcasts and other 2.0 tools will open

My biggest concern is that I see a definite trend toward students having fewer opportunities to engage in face to face communication with anyone. As a kindergarten teacher I am finding that more of my students have no clue how to take turns in a conversation. Most young adults prefer texting to having an actual talk with someone.
\n I think these standards are valuable and that learners in this age need these skills, but we need to teach some basic skills before students can really benefit from the implementation of these standards.
\n I also think these standards should only be implemented in use with the curriculum and should not be taught in and of themselves just to meet the standard. It would be like teaching my class how to hold a pencil, draw lines and hold the paper, but never writing any letters or words.","dateCreated":"1284309253","smartDate":"Sep 12, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"jrobey1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jrobey1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1284837772\/jrobey1-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"26940927","body":"My first thought was "wow...what an intense amount of information!" Then after collecting my thoughts and bias views of technology, I did some more research about NETS. The Federal Government funded the NETS and allowed for changes in the standards because, according to my interpretation, technology is ever changing, students are eager and ready to implement the changes in order to compete with this "globalization of education".That term frightens me because are we truly looking at the best interest of the students or are we trying to simply keep up with other nations? While there may be a need to incorporate updates for our students, what about the technology illiterate teachers?...like myself...Will their tenure ever be in jeopardy if their use of technology in the classroom is not up to par?

The 2007 standards even come equipped with a neat little diagram at the top. Once you read into the standards, it makes the old ones just look prehistoric. So much has changed! I think everyone has the duty to be literate to an extent in regards to technology. My 63 year old dad knows more about computers than I do, and he's taught himself most of it and learned by doing. I want my students to be able to compete in the corporate world and they really do need to be equipped to do so. However, I think it definitely should not rely primarily on the classroom teacher. I think tech teachers should take on a huge role in teaching the students Power Point and the other apps as well as Microsoft Word.
