I would add variety in my library by sharing a story with them by using Safari Montage instead of reading to them at the story rug.The children would have a piece of paper in front of them. I would interrupt the video (pausing) to ask thought provoking questions like...Have you ever felt like the main character feels right now? Take a minute or two and write about that. Or, the character in the story is at the pond, if you were there right now what animals might you see in this habitat- list them....what sounds would you hear.....smell? Jot down your thoughts. I would do this a few times so that it is not just a passive video screening. Next, I would take them over to the computer lab where we would use the software, Pixie. I would ask the students to create a book cover for the story they just viewed. The cover they create would have to display insight they gained about the setting, characters, plot etc from the video. We could print these out and display them in the library.","dateCreated":"1284840721","smartDate":"Sep 18, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"lizsmoot777","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lizsmoot777","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"27254011","body":"I use PowerPoint to introduce vocabulary when we read a new story. The PowerPoint gives definitions for the vocabulary words, pictures, and used the word in a sentences. At the end of the PowerPoint there is a vocabulary quiz the kids can take. I also use Brain Pop Jr. At the end of many Brain Pop Jr videos there are quizzes the children can take. I have them go to the computer lab and complete the quiz.","dateCreated":"1284931424","smartDate":"Sep 19, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"ChristieB.","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ChristieB.","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"27301209","body":"I like the thought of using writing templates to get the students writing on the computer. The article mentioned electronic textbased materials for literary instruction. There are text reading software programs geared towards those students with disabilities that assist with word attack skills and phonics. This would certainly benefit not only my below grade level readers but the many ELL students in my class. I typically don't use the computer for reinforcing reading skills. I usually use the computer for research, vocabulary, math skills but to have the students read a story with highlighted words on their reading level may be very beneficial.","dateCreated":"1285030091","smartDate":"Sep 20, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"talagna","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/talagna","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"27364919","body":"As I was reading I immediately thought of a student I had last year who had a tracking disability. When we went to the computer lab he liked going on NetTreker because it would read the text out loud to you. I also was able to locate another website in order to prepare us for a field trip that read the text out loud to students as an option. It was a great way to engage the students, as well as help those who needed it.","dateCreated":"1285117515","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"mvpolatty86","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mvpolatty86","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1284330335\/mvpolatty86-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"27376987","body":"I really like the idea of using technology to introduce vocabulary before reading. I've mostly used Safari Montage for science and social studies concepts.

I find this works best because rather then seeing cartoon drawings of the objects the children are able to see what they look like in real life.
